In 1894, coal was discovered in the area. Superior was incorporated in 1904 and the name reflected the “superior” quality of the coal being mined in the area. Coal mining ceased in the 1940’s and the economy turned to farming and ranching.
Given the convenient location just south of Boulder, large scale real estate developers were attracted to the area, notably Rock Creek. Today, newer developments such as Downtown Superior continue the growth.
The Davidson Mesa Trailhead is nearby as well as the Coal Creek Trail. Both offer hiking and mountain biking for miles and miles.
